Digestion

The old saying “you are what you eat” has value, but a much more applicable way to describe digestion is “you are what you absorb.” Yearly, around 62 million Americans are diagnosed with digestive issues. So why does modern man experience digestive issues at such an alarming rate?

We understand that our food is not what it used to be; the produce is less nutrient dense and most meat that one eats comes from factor farms and are filled with hormones and antibiotics. We have become a nation dependent on processed foods and our digestive systems are paying the price. Even seemingly healthy options such as food in most major grocery stores is virtually inedible when you compare it to our previous food standards. It is processed, stripped of its original nutrients and saturated with chemicals, additives and colorings. Although today’s food may look aesthetically appealing, this is deceiving. We believe one must strive to eat what was naturally put on the Earth. As soon as man alters natural ingredients, they are unable to nourish our bodies to their full potential.

The American population often doesn’t consider the quality of the food we ingesst. We often eat what looks and tastes good to our senses and utilize it in order to soothe emotional traumas. We indulge in foods that temporarily please us, but these fleeting comfort foods often cause us long-term discomfort. As a result of the stress and fast-paced environment most working people are subjected to, there is very little time to prepare dedicated, healthy meals and many turn to “easy” solutions like fast food. The social and economic climate has changed so vastly in the past decades that our fast paced lives may be now linked to the destruction of our digestive systems. We should all be aiming to heal and to reinstate the factors that allowed prior generations to make time to care for themselves and families through the nutrients they consumed.

Modern medicine is also a major factor in the detriment of our digestive systems. Antibiotics, birth control pills, OTC, and prescription medications interact negatively with our digestive function and cause irregularities in our digestion. It is a Naturopathic principle that the gut is the key to health. Assuming this is true, millions of Americans are in for a tough awakening.

Our goal at Be Well Clinic is to identify the problem, provide our patients with the necessary means to correct their diet and behaviors, and prescribe the appropriate remedies to heal the gut and the microbial systems in the digestive tract. The healthier your digestion is, the healthier you will be.
